Adventures for Women: All Day Trippin' Down the Chippewa
Registration Deadline: 10/1/10. Most of our paddle trips on the Chippewa River are just a couple of hours, from CNC's boat launch to the Tridge, or from our Chippewa Cabin site to our main property. But this time out, we're going to make a whole day of it! We'll put in at Magruder Road and paddle all the way to our main canoe launch (just past the Pine/Chippewa confluence), with a lunch break at Midland County's Manitou Park and another rest stop at CNC's Chippewa Cabin. (Facilities are not exciting at either place - both have pit toilets.) The Magruder Road site is not an easy put-in site - a steep bank with a healthy poison ivy population, but once you're in, it's a beautiful stretch of river! At Manitou Park, the trail up to the restrooms and picnic area is quite steep, so we'll just tie our boats up at the bank. Participants should dress for changing weather conditions through the day, and bring beverages/sack lunch/snacks.

Adventures for Women: Geocaching Workshop
Registration Deadline: 11/12/10. What do you get when you mix space age technology and a scavenger hunt? Geocaching! Louise Wilkins, an avid outdoors woman and frequent participant in the Adventures for Women programs, along with CNC Senior Naturalist Janea Little, will lead this program and take you through the basics of geocaching - an outdoor activity that's been sweeping the world for the last few years. Geocachers use a hand- held GPS (Global Positioning System) and the Internet to get coordinates that will lead them to caches hidden all over the world. the caches usually contain a log book, recyclable camera and other treasures. The program will focus on GPS basics, how to get cache coordinates and responsible geocaching behavior. Explore the outdoors in a new way by trying out this popular activity. CNC will provide the GPS units. (If participants bring their own, they must already know the basics of using their specific model.)

Big Island Lake Wilderness Canoe Adventure
Four Day Trip: Sept. 9- Sept 12. Registration Deadline: 8/23/10. The Big Island Lake Wilderness Area lies in the heart of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The area features 23 small lakes, ranging in size from five to 149 acres. The lakes are situated among low, rolling hills and are connected by canoe portages. Our group will leave CNC in a 15-passenger van at 7:00am. As we arrive at the Wilderness Area we'll carry our gear and canoes to Big Island Lake and paddle to a backcountry campsite. We'll spend the next three days exploring northern lakes, observing wildlife and enjoying the peaceful pace of the northern autumn forest. On foot, we'll also look for evidence of old logging camps, an old homestead and abandoned railroad grades. CNC will provide canoes, paddles, PFDs, a group water filter and other group gear. Other gear, such as portage packs, backpacks, dry bags, tents and sleeping pads are available for loan at no extra charge (first-come, first-served). Participants are required to provide all other gear and their own meals throughout the trip (including cooking gear and stove). A required pre-trip meeting to review gear recommendations, a preview of photos from the area and backcountry camping basics will be held on 8/24/2010 in the CNC's temporary Visitor Center. A suggested gear list will be mailed to participants at time of registration.
